Morgan Lee named NSIC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

Junior Morgan Lee (G, Hayward, Wis.) scored a career-high 32 points for the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team at University of Mount Mercy Nov. 20 and was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday in an announcement from the league office. Lee is the first NSIC Player of the Week from the BSU women’s basketball team since Katie Pettit earned the honor Dec. 12, 2009.

Lee posted 32 points on career-best 8-for-15 (53.3%) shooting from 3-point land to propel the Beavers to an 85-67 victory and improve the team’s 2012-13 record to 4-0 – its best start since the 1974-75 season. Lee’s big numbers in 3-pointers made (8) and 3-pointers attempted (15) each fell one short of the program record. She went 11-for-19 (57.9%) from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to establish career-bests in field goals made and attempted.

The junior had just eight points at halftime when the Beavers trailed 30-26. In the second half she tallied 24 points on 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc to guide BSU to a 59-37 advantage in the final 20 minutes.

Her 32 points ties for seventh on Bemidji State’s single-game scoring list with Heidi Matzke, who scored 32 points at University of Minnesota, Crookston, Feb. 10, 2008. It is the first 30-point game for a BSU student-athlete since Taylor Davis posted 31 points at St. Cloud State Jan. 9, 2010.

The 1974-75 squad opened its season 13-0 and only three teams in program history have started 4-0 or better, prior to this season.

BSU begins NSIC play Dec. 1 at home against University of Minnesota, Crookston at 2 p.m.
