Sophomore southpaw Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) hurled a complete game shutout as the Bemidji State University baseball team downed Minot State University 7-0 in game two of a doubleheader at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. Friday. BSU won game one 12-4 to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The BSU Beavers struck first in the top of the second inning with two runs, but Minot State responded with one in the third and two in the fourth to lead 3-2 after four. BSU scored twice in the fifth, but MSU found a run in the bottom half of the inning and the game was tied 4-4. Bemidji State then opened up the scoring with a season-high eight-run sixth inning that included a grand slam by senior Brian Murphy (1B, Longville, Minn.), to own a 12-4 lead that would stand until the final out.
Sophomore Logan Kalis (RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) pitched five complete innings and allowed all four MSU runs. Murphy went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Freshman Dylan Webb (INF, Phoenix, Ariz.) was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Junior Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) was 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun and two RBI.
Bray stole the show for BSU in game two. He threw seven complete innings and allowed just three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Bemidji State scored once in the bottom of the first and that would be all it needed, en route to its first shutout of the season.
Senior outfielder Colton Smith (Waddell, Ariz.) had a career-high three doubles in the game, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Freshman Cody Bergquist (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) was 2-for-3 with a run and stolen base. Senior Joe Chism (C, Great Bend, Kan.) was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
The Beavers have March 12 off and close their spring trip March 13 with a single nine inning contest agaisnt Valley City State at 10 a.m.
