The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against the Lindenwood University Saturday night. The Beavers went 1-0-1 in their opening series of the 2013-14 season. With the tie, BSU holds a 2-0-1 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.
After a scoreless first period, the scoring got started in the second. BSU’s Emily McKnight (F, 5-8, Sr., R, Carmen, Manitoba) was whistled for slashing 1:42 into the period and LU would make the Beavers pay. The Lions needed only seven seconds of the power play time to score the first goal of the game. All three of Lindenwood’s goals in the series were on the power play.
Bemidji State answered with a goal of its at the 18:17 of the second period. Shortly after the Lions killed a BSU power play, the Beavers scored on a slap shot from senior captain Allie Duellman (D, 5-8, R, Maplewood, Minn.) from the blue line to tie the game, 1-1. Rachael Kelly (F, 5-8, Jr., R, Rosemount, Minn.) and Kristine Grenier (F, 5-6, Jr., R, St. Leon, Manitoba) were credited with assists on the goal.
The teams were not only tied on the scoreboard, they also posted matching shot totals. Each team had 28 shots in the game.
For the Beavers, Kaitlyn Tougas (F, 5-4, So., R, Thunder Bay, Ontario) led the Beavers with five shots on net. Forward Stephanie Anderson (5-9, R-So., L, North St. Paul, Minn.) had four and Kelly had three.
Between the pipes for the Beavers, freshman Brittni Mowat (5-7, Fr., L, Glenboro, Manitoba) got her second straight start. The freshman turned aside 27 shots, while allowing just one goal. She moves to 1-0-1 on the season.
Bemidji State returns to Sanford Center for its home opener. The Beavers will host Robert Morris University at 7 p.m. Oct. 11. The two teams will wrap up the nonconference series Oct. 12 at 4 p.m.
