The Bemidji State University men’s golf team carded a 41-over-par 329 on the second day of the 2013-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Fall Men’s Golf Championship Tuesday. The round, played at The Classic at Madden’s in Brainerd, Minn., served as the final 18 holes of the fall portion of the 72-hole, comprehensive championship.
Freshman A.J. Oster (Andover, Minn.) turned in Bemidji State’s best round Tuesday, carding a six-over-par 78. He used the round to jump out of a tie for 26th after Day 1 (81) and into a tie for 20th with a two-day total of 81-78–159 (+15). BSU’s leader after 18 holes, Aaron Leintz (Fr., Bagley, Minn.), continues to lead the team despite posting an 81 (+9) Tuesday. He completed the fall portion of the event tied for 14th place individually with 76-81—157 (+13). Leintz finished 11 stokes off the pace set by Tyler Koivisto of St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University’s Ross Miller, who share the lead after 36 holes at two-over-par (146).
After assembling a nine-stoke lead Monday, St. Cloud State recorded a 303 (+15) Tuesday to finish the fall portion of the championship with a 296-303—599 (+23) and a 15-hot lead over Minnesota State (309-305—614) and the rest of the field.
Bemidji State completed 36 holes tied or sixth place with Minot State University and Augustana College at 643 (+67).
The two-round fall event served as the first half of a unique conference championship. Following 36 holes at The Classic, NSIC teams will now take a six-month hiatus before deciding cumulative individual and team champions with 36 holes at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn. April 11-12.
The Bemidji State men’s golf team will wrap up the fall portion of its season Oct. 14-15 hen it travels to St. Joseph, Mo. to complete in the Missouri Western State University Central Region Invitational.
