The Bemidji State University tennis team gears up for three matches this weekend. The Beavers open the weekend with a neutral-site match versus Martin Luther College Friday before wrapping up their home season versus the University of Mary Saturday before hitting the road Sunday for a clash with Minnesota State University, Mankato.
BSU will meet Martin Luther in Sartell, Minn. Friday at 10 a.m. for a nonconference matchup at Revolution Tennis Club. The Beavers and Knights met a year ago (April 6) in New Ulm, Minn. BSU won the match 7-2 for its only victory of the season.
The Beavers host U-Mary for its final home contest of the 2014 season Saturday at noon. Last time the Beavers and Marauders went head to head, Feb. 24, 2013, U-Mary grabbed an 8-1 victory on its home court. Dating back to 2005, BSU is 3-3 versus the Marauders and has been victorious in three of the last four meetings between the teams.
The Beavers will make their way back to Revolution Tennis Club in Sartell, Minn. for another NSIC matchup with Minnesota State Sunday at 11 a.m. Tin its last seven meetings with the Mavericks, BSU has assembled a 2-5 record, but seeks its first victory over MSU since a 7-2 win over the Mavericks to open the 2004 season.
A victory this weekend would give the Beavers seven victories, marking its highest win total since posting a 7-14 record in 2008.
In a match against University of Minnesota Morris last weekend, the Beavers dominated in doubles competition winning all three matches 8-4, 8-0, and the No. 3 spot by forfeit. In singles play, Justine Scheller (Fr., Mankato, Minn.) beat UMM 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. With only four players on its team, Minnesota Morris had to forfeit the No. 5 and 6 spot leaving BSU to take a 6-3 win. In their match against University of Minnesota Crookston, the Beavers won 7-2 only falling in the No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles position.
