The Bemidji State University tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato Sunday in Sartell, Minn.
The Beavers fall to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with one week and three matches left in the 2014 regular season.
After dropping matches to the Mavericks by matching scores of 8-3 at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, Bemidji State’s No. 3 doubles pair of Abby Vohaska (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and Justine Scheller (Fr., Mankato, Minn.) battled back to earn a 9-7 win and send the Beavers into singles play trailing the Mavericks 2-1.
As singles play got underway, the Mavericks continued to roll, earning straight set victories in the top five singles matches. Scheller opened play at No. 6 singles with a 6-2 victory, but MSU’s Abby Schmidt forced a tie breaker with a 6-4 win in the second set. Schmidt and the Mavericks completed the singles sweep and took the match, 8-1, with a 10-6 tiebreak win.
The Beavers cap the 2014 regular season with three matches versus NSIC competition on Grand Forks, N.D. April 12-13. BSU opens the weekend with a nonconference match up with University of Minnesota Crookston at 9 a.m. Saturday followed by a league clash with University of Sioux Falls at 4:30 p.m. Sunday the Beavers will face Minnesota State University, Moorhead in the regular season finale at 8:30 a.m.
