The Bemidji State University softball team will hit the road for three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheaders this week. The first twin bill will be against St. Cloud State University at 2 p.m. Tuesday. BSU will then make the trek west to tangle with Northern State University Friday and Minnesota State University Moorhead Saturday. First pitch against the Wolves is scheduled for 1p.m. and noon for the double dip against the Dragons.

Scouting the Beavers: Bemidji State (11-19) enters the week in search of its first conference victory (0-14). The Beavers have been led offensively by their three outfielders. Lyndsey Peterson (So., Cottonwood, Minn.), Angie Roberts (Fr., Andover, Minn.) and Nicole Dupay (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) have accounted for eight of BSU’s 10 home runs this season, 39 percent of its hits and 44 percent of its runs batted in. Peterson leads the way with four home runs and 18 RBI, while Dupay leads the squad with 24 hits.

BSU has three pitchers that have logged at least 50.2 innings in the circle this season. Freshman Danielle Jecmen (P, Bloomingdale, Ill.) leads the staff in victories (five), strikeouts (48) and innings pitched (76.1). Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) leads the team with a 5.09 earned run average in 64.2 innings. Bemidji native Jessica Yost (P/1B, Fr.) is the third pitcher of the trio and has a record of 3-5 and a 5.53 ERA.

Scouting St. Cloud State: A season after winning 25 games, St. Cloud State has struggled to win just eight times so far in 2014. (8-18-1). SCSU has youthful squad with 12 underclassmen and just seven upperclassmen.

The Huskies’ offense does not depend upon the long ball as they have just two home runs this season. Senior Breana Canova has one of those round trippers and leads SCSU’s offense. Canova paces St. Cloud State in most major offensive categories including batting average (.352), slugging percentage (.462) and runs batted in (18).

SCSU’s pitching staff has been led by junior Kelly Franks. Franks is 3-9 with a 3.54 ERA in 100.2 innings pitched. The 2013 All-NSIC Second Team member has held opposing hitters to a .211 batting average with 105 strikeouts.

Scouting Northern State: Like SCSU, Northern State has a very youthful team in 2014. NSU has just one senior and two juniors to go with 12 underclassmen.

One of those freshman, Rachel Albright, has paced the Wolves’ offense. The Pasadena, Calif. native is hitting .320 with seven home runs and 20 runs batted in. Albright has also logged 18 innings in the circle this season with six strikeouts.

Other than Albright, Northern State relies on two main pitchers. Kami Smemso is the ace of the staff with a record of 7-11 and a 4.24 ERA in 19 starts, while Missy Elkins has contributed two wins in 71 innings.

Scouting MSU Moorhead: MSU Moorhead comes into the week with a mark of 9-18 (5-13 NSIC). The Dragons’ nine wins have already surpassed their win total from all of 2013 (7-36, 5-23 NSIC).

A pair of juniors pace MSUM’s offense. Mollie Annen and Brittany York both have a batting average of .291 to lead the Dragons. Annen leads the squad in runs (12), while York paces the team in home runs (five) and runs batted in (14).

MSUM has used just two pitchers in 2014. Kristen Nordby has a record of 4-9, 3.40 ERA in 84.1 innings pitched, while Morgan Nybo leads the staff in with five wins, innings pitched (87.2) and strikeouts (57) in 87.2 innings of work.
