Andrew Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) carded a two-under-par 70 Monday to separate himself from the field and lead the Bemidji State University men’s golf team to the 2014 BSU Invitational team title. Benson fired a three-under-par 141 (71-70) at the par-72, 6,545-yard Bemidji Town and Country Club to win the event by two strokes.
Benson’s performance also led the Beavers to a season-opening win. BSU’s team of Benson, Trevor Martensson (Fr., Calgary, Alberta), Jeffrey Shermoen (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) and Aaron Leintz (So., Bagley, Minn.) posted back-to-back sub-300 scores (298-297) to complete the 36-hole event at +19 (595) and grab a 22-stroke win over Minot State University (308-309/+41) for the team title, while University of Minnesota Crookston finished third at 635 (318-317/+30).
The Beavers look to continue their roll Sept. 15-16 when they travel to Axtell, Neb. to compete in the 36-hole University of Nebraska-Kearney Invitational.
