The Bemidji State University softball team begins an eight-game road swing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tuesday with a trip to University of Mary. The doubleheader against the Marauders is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
The Beavers are 12-10 overall and 3-3 in NSIC play this season. Both win totals are the most for BSU since 2006 (17) and 2011 (4), respectively.
BSU’s offense has been led by outfielders Lyndsey Peterson and Angie Roberts this season. Peterson ranks 11th in the NSIC with a .403 batting average, while Roberts is 19th in the conference hitting at a .372 clip. In addition to Peterson and Roberts, BSU has five other hitters that have appeared in at least half the games and have batting averages higher than .300.
Sophomore Jessica Yost has led BSU’s pitching staff this season. Yost, who has nine of BSU’s 12 victories in the circle, has struck out 100 hitters in 67.2 innings this season and have held opponents to a .236 batting average. The Bemidji, Minn. native ranks fifth in the NSIC with a 2.17 ERA, seventh in strikeouts (100) and eighth in batting average against (.236).
Freshmen Lexi Ripka and Jaclyn Braiedy are both riding five-game hitting streaks. Ripka is batting .300 and is tied for the team-lead with 14 RBI, while Braiedy leads all BSU freshmen with a .333 batting average.
BSU is 10-2 this season when scoring first, but it is 2-8 when its opponents cross the plate first. In addition, when the Beavers hold their opponents to 0-2 runs, they are a perfect 7-0.
