The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team pulled a double-digit deficit down to six points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t fully climb back in a 75-67 loss to Minnesota State University Moorhead Saturday at the BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers (6-12, 2-12 NSIC) held a seven-point lead in the first quarter before trailing at halftime to the Dragons (13-4, 10-4 NSIC).
Four different Beavers scored to open the game, as BSU took a 9-5 lead two and a half minutes into action. Tatum Sheley sank her first three-pointer of the day before following with another one minute later. The Dragons pulled to within one point before Aimee Pelzer followed Sheley’s lead and made back-to-back shots from long range, both set up by Sierra Senske, to take an 18-11 lead in the first quarter. The lead was the largest for the Beavers in the first half as the Dragons closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run.
Sheley led all Beavers with 15 points while Hanna Zerr, Pelzer and Allie Knuti also topped double-digit scoring. Pelzer paced BSU on the boards by pulling down six rebounds. She and Zerr added five assists each. Bemidji State finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (25-60) from the field and 52.9 percent (9-17) from behind the arc, while allowing MSU Moorhead to 42.9 percent (27-53) from the floor and 42.9 percent (9-21) from long range.
Bemidji State finishes a four-game home stand Jan. 29-30 while hosting No. 14 Winona State University and Upper Iowa University. The Beavers will face the Warriors and Peacocks in the teams’ only meetings of the season.
