The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team had a chance to repeat a last-second victory against Northern State University Saturday night but the Wolves prevailed in a 71-69 win over the Beavers at Wachs Arena. Despite lock down defense from senior guard DJ Anderson, NSU’s Skye Warwick sank a 3-point prayer in the final seconds to force BSU into a last second possession.
The Beavers (10-16, 7-15 NSIC) and Wolves (17-11, 13-9 NSIC) came down to the final seconds for the second time this season, with the ball bouncing the other way in Saturday’s meeting. Following the Wolves conversion to go up 71-69, the Beavers held one more possession to attempt to take the game. BSU turned the ball over, though, with three seconds remaining to seal the game.
Senior forward Irvin Womack reached 20-plus points for the second consecutive night after previously holding a career high of 17 in a game. He finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, 14 in the second half, and added six rebounds. Womack led BSU in both halves while keeping the team within two points of NSU heading into halftime.
Bemidji State opens the first round of the NSIC postseason tournament at Minnesota State University Mankato Wednesday, February 24. The Beavers and Mavericks tip off at 7 p.m. from Mankato, Minn. Listen to the game on the Beaver radio Network.
