The Bemidji State University Tennis team has earned a berth into the 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, April 23-24. Establishing a new program record for wins, going 11-5 overall and 6-5 in league play, the Beavers were seeded No. 7 and will face second-seeded Upper Iowa University (11-8; 10-1 NSIC) in the first round of the tournament.
After the 11-match regular season, the top eight teams were seeded into the tournament based on their NSIC record. Play will begin at Lifetime Fitness in Minnetonka, Minn. at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Beavers’ quarterfinal match up with Upper Iowa. The Peacocks defeated the Beavers for one of their 10 conference wins Feb. 13, 6-3.
With no NSIC postseason presence since 2009, the 2016 event will mark the Beavers’ debut in the team format championship established in 2010.
In addition to BSU and UIU, the regular-season champion and top seed Augustana University (21-1; 11-0 NSIC) will take on No. 8 seed University of Mary (6-9; 4-7 NSIC) in the 2 p.m. match; (3) St. Cloud State University (12-8; 8-3 NSIC) will battle the (6) University of Sioux Falls (11-7; 7-4 NSIC) at 11:30 a.m.; and the No. 4 seed Minnesota State University Moorhead (8-6; 7-4 NSIC) will face the No. 5 seed Minnesota State University, Mankato (7-8; 7-4 NSIC) at 4:30 p.m. in the final match of the day.
Semifinal matches will take place at 8 a.m. Sunday with the championship match set for noon Sunday.
The winner of the NSIC Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Central Region Tournament, May 7-10. The NCAA Division II Championships will take place May 18-21 in Denver, Colorado.
