Samantha Velde set the school record in the hammer throw to highlight the Bemidji State Women’s Track and Field team’s participation in the Holst Invitational, Saturday.
Velde’s hammer throw of 153-feet, 10-inches was good for a sixth place finish out of 46 competitors and went over three feet beyond Shena Devine’s previous BSU school-record mark of 150-09 set in 2007. She also recorded a top-10 finish in the shot put.
Senior sprinter Sara Melom set a personal-best time in the 400-meter run with a time of 59.70, good for a fourth place finish out of 38 competitors.
Freshman hurdler Christa Benson had a ninth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles to set a personal-best time of 1:09.11 .
Phillie Bacon established another top-10 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing seventh. Her time of 12:18.83 also beat her career-best set last weekend.
Chloe Miller had a personal-best long jump mark of 16-2.25 to finish in 11th out of 26 participants.
Thrower Ciara Brewster finished in the top-10 in the shot put with a throw of 38-11.75.
The Beavers head to Fargo, N.D. next weekend to compete in the Lyle Hokanson Classic on the campus of North Dakota State University.
