The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team scored first behind a power-play goal by Annie Bauerfeld (Sr., For., Woodbury, Minn.), but couldn’t keep up with No. 5 Wisconsin as the Badgers scored seven straight to down the Beavers 7-1 on Friday night at the Kohl Center.

After scoring the early goal, the Beavers went to their locker room with a 1-0 lead after the first. BSU held Wisconsin to only seven shots on goal in the first period while taking six on the Badger net.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, the first-period goal seemed to awake the sleeping giant and the Badgers entered the second period determined to take control of the game. Just five minutes into the period Wisconsin tied the game as U.S. Olympian Hilary Knight scored her only goal of the game. The Badgers would go on to score three more in the second period, making the score 4-1 after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Badgers didn’t back down and scored three more times, including a goal in the final minute to bring the final score to 7-1. Carolyne Prevost had a hat trick in the game for Wisconsin, while Olympians Knight and Meghan Duggan each had a goal and an assist.

After getting six shots on goal in the first period, the Beavers were held to just five in the remaining two periods. The Badgers peppered Zuzana Tomcikova (Jr., G., Bratislava, Slovakia) with 36 shots in the game. The BSU defense chipped in blocking another 22 shots that could have ended on goal.

The Beavers will play the Badgers again, but will have to wait until Sunday for the rematch as Wisconsin’s homecoming football game forced a rescheduling of the original game date. Sunday’s game is set to begin at 2:07 p.m
