Day Off

The BSU women’s hockey team got a day off from playing Saturday while in Madison…thanks to the Homecoming football game between the Badgers and the Minnesota Gophers. Guess the police department didn’t want to deal with traffic and fans from two games that day.

I was fortunate to get set up with a media credential to Camp Randall for the big game. Honestly, I grew up in the Twin Cities and was a Gopher fan, for the most part, when I was a child. I even attending the University of Minnesota for two years (but got smart and transferred to Bemidji State University to finish my four year degree). With that said, I don’t have any loyalties to the Gophers especially during the hockey season. I married a Badger fan and into a Wisconsin family. I find myself cheering for Badger football and basketball only because if they win then I have a happy husband.

On this day off from hockey, I find myself blogging from seat #42 second row on the 8th floor in the Camp Randall press box. The Gophers are down 14-3 and driving one last time before half time of the football game. The stadium is a “sea of red” and my prediction came true when I said that the Badger’s student section would be full by halftime. I can smell lunch being cooked up for all us media people and I’m going to guess it’s some kind of Mexican delicacy like fajitas. What else can I say, it’s 80 degrees outside on October 9th in Madison, Wisconsin…it doesn’t feel like football weather, but it most definitely doesn’t feel like hockey weather!

You may wonder what the team is doing on such a beautiful day. Last I heard before I left the hotel, they were going for a morning run after breakfast and then head to the East Town Mall. The ladies were so excited to visit a “real mall” today. Nothing against our lovely Paul Bunyan Mall, but the one here in Madison has 200 stores. I’m sure the parents reading this right now are saying “oh, no, not the mall,” but to be honest there are a lot worse things that could be done by young people on homecoming weekend in Mad Town.

The team will practice tonight at the Kohl Center and then head to Rossario’s in Monona, WI which I’ve been told is a fabulous experience. Look for my blog update later tonight.

At the half, Badger football leads the Gophers 14-9 in the Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. I wonder if these people know that Paul Bunyan was from Bemidji, Minnesota…that Axe belongs to us šŸ˜‰
