The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team showed flashes of brilliance in the fourth quarter but it came too late in a 91-58 loss to Fort Hays State University in the Huskies Classic. The Beavers (2-1) scored 30 fourth quarter points in the team’s first loss of the season, coming at the hands of the undefeated Tigers (4-0).
Sophomore forward Emma Rappe scored a team-high 12 points in the first half, although Fort Hays State controlled the scoreboard after getting hot late in the first quarter. Rappe scored eight of BSU’s first 10 points as the Beavers trailed 13-10 with 3:30 left in the first quarter. BSU and FHSU were on opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to shooting following that mark, as the Tigers began a 37-7 run that lasted through the first eight minutes of the second quarter.
The Beavers were only able to sink 30% from the floor, shooting 9-of-30 from the field and 2-of-9 from 3-point range in the first half. Bemidji State attempted to change its defensive scheme late in the second quarter with a zone look, but Fort Hays State ended the opening half shooting 52.6% from the field and took a 52-21 lead into halftime.
Bemidji State returns home following the Thanksgiving break to host Crown College at BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers and Comets tip off at 6 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the season.
