The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team plays its first home games of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule this weekend against No. 25 Northern State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Beavers (3-3, 0-2 NSIC) first host the Wolves (6-1, 2-1 NSIC) at 6 p.m. on Friday followed by the Dragons (6-1, 3-0 NSIC) at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Series vs. Northern State
The Beavers and Wolves series history dates back to Jan. 24, 1986, a span of 63 games led by NSU, 53-10. The Wolves have won the last six games against the Beavers. Senior Tatum Sheley and senior Hanna Zerr averaged 10 points against the Wolves last season, including a double-double by Sheley with 12 points and a career high 10 rebounds on Jan. 22, 2016.
The Series vs. MSU Moorhead
The Dragons also lead the 102-game series against the Beavers, 63-39, that dates back to 1968. MSUM has won the last nine games against BSU. Sheley averaged 17.5 points per game against the Dragons last season, including a 20-point outing on Feb. 19, 2016.
Amy Pelzer led BSU with 19 points, followed by junior Sierra Senske with 17, against UMD. Pelzer shot 6-for-15 from the field, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists and recorded two steals.
Northern State defeated both Minot State University and University of Mary at home to earn its first two NSIC victories of the 2016-17 season and to move up to No. 25 in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll. NSU opened its previous weekend of action with a 74-53 win against MiSU and finished with a 59-38 win against U-Mary.
MSU Moorhead upped its winning streak to six and overall record to 6-1 entering this weekend’s games after a sweep at home last weekend. MSUM beat U-Mary, 82-59 on Friday thanks to 12 3-pointers, including 11 in the first half. The Dragons followed with a 57-46 win over the Beavers of Minot State on Saturday.
