The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team welcomes in Northern State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead for BSU’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home opening weekend. The Beavers (3-4, 1-1 NSIC) play the Wolves (5-4, 1-2 NSIC) at 8 p.m. Friday followed by a 6 p.m. tip-off against the Dragons (7-1, 3-0 NSIC) on Saturday at BSU Gymnasium.
The Series vs. Northern State
Bemidji State and Northern State continue a 57-year history with the 87th game in the series lead by NSU, 60-26. The Beavers and Wolves split the 2015-16 season series, as each home team won by two points or less. BSU came away with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat NSU, 90-89, on Jan. 22, 2016.
The Series vs. MSU Moorhead
Bemidji State and MSU Moorhead will play the 179th game in the all-time series, a history that dates back 88 years. The Dragons swept the Beavers last season, winning each game by at least 13 points. Senior forward Will Harvey averaged 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds between the two games against MSUM last season.
BSU opened the 2016-17 NSIC schedule with a split at Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State to improve its overall record to 3-4. The Beavers extended their win streak to three games with the 75-73 win in overtime over the Bulldogs, but lost the streak after losing 98-95 to the Huskies. BSU’s Peyton Dibble scored 27 points on the weekend (14 vs UMD, 13 vs SCSU).
Northern State battled it out in two close conference matches, defeating Minot State University, 91-87, and falling to University of Mary, 77-75. Northern State held a lead as large as 23 points against Minot State, but were able to hold off the rallying Beavers to secure the victory. The Wolves and Marauders faced a tie score on three occasions, however NSU lost the lead late in the second and were unable to regain it.
MSU Moorhead swept U-Mary and Minot State to enter this weekend’s game with a 7-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play. The Dragons have now won six games in a row after beating the Marauders, 82-66, on Dec. 2 and the Beavers, 96-87, on Dec. 3.
