Beavers drop final games at No. 12 Illinois Springfield
BSU Baseball falls to 0-4 with 14-2 and 16-5 losses Sunday
The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell in both games of its final doubleheader at No. 12 University of Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon. The No. 12 Prairie Stars began the day with a 14-2 victory over the Beavers and then won 16-5 in game two to complete the sweep.
The Beavers struggled at the plate in game one and recorded just two hits in the game and scored their lone two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Tyrese Allen drove in one of the runs with an RBI single while Zach Moritz earned a walk with the bases loaded for another RBI. Jack Munson added the last hit for the Beavers in the fourth inning.
Freshman Riley Bersaw earned the loss on the mound after pitching 1.2 innings and allowed 11 earned runs off eight hits. Beau Barry, AJ Gengler and Ethan Lung all came into pitch following Bersaw.
In the second game of the day the Prairie Stars used a five-run first inning to get in front of the Beavers and never looked back cruising to a 16-5 victory.
Bemidji State had more success at the plate and collected eight hits in the game but left 15 runners stranded on the basepaths. Munson and Ty Karger each had multiple hits for the Beavers with Karger hitting a two-run home run in the third inning after Munson doubled for the Beavers’ first home run of the 2023 season. Karger and Munson also led the team with two runs batted in while Derek Dolezal drove in another and also drew two walks.
Jacob Marx earned the loss after surrendering the first five runs. Isaiah Biehn came into pitch 3.2 innings in relief and allowed four earned runs while Derek Hoffman, Konrad Kisch and Christian Turner all pitched in relief.
Bemidji State will continue non-conference play this weekend when the Beavers travel to Liberty, Mo., to face William Jewell College for a four-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 3.
