The Bemidji State University soccer team got goals from Stephanie Challes (F, Sr., Andover, Minn.) and Carly Dietrich (M, So., St. Charles, Ill.) en rout to a 2-0 Senior Day victory over the University of Sioux Falls Sunday at Chet Anderson Stadium.
With a starting line up comprised mostly of seniors, it took the Beavers only 5:40 to get on the scoreboard. Junior Maria McLeod (M, White Bear Lake, Minn.) pushed a pass through traffic in front of the net and Challes, a senior, booted it into the right side of the net for the first goal of her career.
Bemidji State would take a 1-0 lead into halftime of the physical game.
Physical play continued into the second half and when a BSU forward was hauled down just outside the box in the 75th minute, Dietrich made them pay. The Sophomore fired a laser over the Cougars’ wall and out of the reach of the USF goalkeeper Corrin Cook to settle the score at 2-0.
BSU finished the match with a 17-15 edge in shots, with 11 on goal.
Goalkeeper Sonja Barr (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) made seven saves in 90 minutes between the posts to record her third shutout of the season. She improves to 4-1-0.
Prior to the game, BSU recognized the its six seniors. They are: Bronwyn Boyd (F, Bemidji, Minn.), Challes, Samantha Lumberg (D, Woodbury, Minn.), Alex Petes (M, Yorba Linda, Calif.), Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Chaska, Minn.), Jessie Voeller (F, White Bear Lake, Minn.).
The Beavers, now 7-4-0 overall and 4-3 in NSIC play, return to action Oct. 12-13 when they travel west for a pair of league match ups. BSU will face Northern State University in Aberdeen, N.D. Saturday at 1 p.m., before wrapping the weekend up in Moorhead, Minn. for a 1 p.m. battle with Minnesota State University, Moorhead Sunday.
