Beaver Fever Friday – Molly Flahavan – BSU Soccer

Just 24 hours into its 2014 preseason training, the Bemidji State University soccer team will jump into a match situation. Tomorrow, the Beavers will travel to Fargo, N.D. for a 7 p.m. exhibition versus North Dakota State University.

The exhibition marks the third consecutive season the Beavers and Bison have met on the pitch. A year ago, NDSU defeated the Beavers, 2-0, to open BSU’s exhibition season, while two years ago it took the Bison two overtime sessions before they triumphed over the Beavers, 2-1.

Head coach Jim Stone, who is in his 13th year at the helm of the BSU soccer program, welcomes 26 players to camp this season, which includes six regular starters, 14 additional letterwinners and six newcomers. Sarah Stram (So., F, Elk Grove, Ill.) highlights all returning players after posting 19 points as a freshman, including a team-best seven goals and a pair of game-winners. Junior Abby Nyquist (D, Golden Valley, Minn.) added a team-high seven assists and 11 points from the BSU backline.

Bemidji State is coming off a 2013 campaign during which it posted a 12-7-0 overall record and a 9-6 mark in NSIC play to finish sixth in the final league standings. Stone and the Beavers earned its fifth consecutive berth into the postseason, but were ousted from the first round of the NSIC Tournament by University of Minnesota Duluth, 2-0.

The Beavers officially open the 2014 campaign Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Brookings, S.D. for a nonconference affair versus NCAA Division I South Dakota State University. The match begins BSU’s 18-game regular-season schedule, while the Beavers home opener against Augustana College is slated for 1 p.m., Oct. 4 at Chet Anderson Stadium.
