For nearly four decades women have been representing Bemidji State University through their participation in athletics. To ensure women have the same opportunities and more for decades to come, the Bemidji State Athletic Department has announced its second annual Walk for Women, set for Saturday, Sept. 25. The BSU Walk for Women helps to be a means of financial support to Bemidji State women’s athletics, providing young females with opportunities on and off the playing field.
“This is an extremely important fund-raiser for women’s athletics at Bemidji State,” said Sarah Levesque, Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Women Administrator at BSU. “We are really excited for this event. We’ve already received a lot of support from the community and hope a lot of people come out to show our student-athletes how important they are to this University and the Bemidji area.”
The dollars raised will go toward academic scholarships for BSU’s female student-athletes. This much needed financial assistance is instrumental in helping BSU’s athletes earn their education and succeed in the classroom, while they compete in the 10 women’s varsity sports offered at Bemidji State.
The event, which raised $13,000 last year, will take place at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse on the campus of Bemidji State. The ‘rain or shine’ walk begins with registration from 9-9:30 a.m. at the Glas. During registration, Beaver fans young and old will have the opportunity to play games run by the student-athletes, get their faces painted and meet Bucky.
From 9:30-10 a.m. a short program will highlight last year’s achievements in women’s athletics and the future of those programs, with honorary chair Nancy Bensen serving as the Master of Ceremonies.
At 10 a.m. the walk will begin. Student-athletes, coaches and members of the BSU Athletics staff will be on hand to cheer on the walkers and guide them around the beautiful lake-side campus and back to the Glas. If inclement weather does occur, walkers will be encouraged to walk around the Glas and continue to enjoy the games and company of the student-athletes and coaches.
The walk will be 30 minutes long, followed by a light breakfast sponsored by McDonalds. There will be walk announcements, drawings for special prizes and numerous door prizes that will be handed out after the walk.
Walkers can register at the event on Saturday. There is no fee to participate, but donations are appreciated. With a donation of $50 or more, the walker receives a Walk for Women T-shirt. Everybody is eligible for the door prizes.
