Freshman kicker Mason Hoffer connected on a 38-yard field goal in overtime to seal No. 25 Bemidji State University football’s 31-28 win over Northern State University Saturday at Chet Anderson Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Nick Mehlum made his first career start to keep the Beavers undefeated in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division action (5-1, 2-0 NSIC North).
BSU found itself in a 14-0 hole heading into the second quarter before Mehlum threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Eric Wunrow in the back of the end zone. Senior running back Gena Adams tied the game in the third quarter before Northern State was able to take a 28-21 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.
Junior running back Tahi Nomane converted the game-tying touchdown with 17 seconds left to force overtime. The Beavers forced a fourth down for the Wolves on their first offensive possession, which NSU attemped and failed a fake field goal pass play. Bemidji State took over and commited to running the ball, which set up a the 38-yard field goal attempt for Hoffer. The Minot, N.D., native, who had successfully convereted four extra point attempts on the day, saw his first career field goal attempt sail through the uprights to seal the comeback victory for the Beavers.
FOr his efforts, Hoffer was the NSIC Special Teams Play Of The Week. BSU hosts Minot State for Homecoming this Saturday.
